CBS has found its “Supergirl” in “Glee” alum Melissa Benoist. The hourlong drama pilot was written by Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler, and hails from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. The eponymous series centers on Superman’s cousin, Kara Zor-El, who escaped from Krypton amid the planet’s destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous relative. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. “Supergirl” is the latest DC Comics-based show to emerge from Berlanti’s stable; the in-demand producer also oversees “Arrow” and “The Flash” for CBS sister net the CW. The drama was given a series commitment in September. Kara has previously been portrayed on the bigscreen by Helen Slater, and appeared on the CW’s Superman origin series “Smallville” in the guise of Laura Vandervoort. CBS chair Nina Tassler shared her first impressions of the project at the network’s recent TCA Winter Press Tour presentation: “She embodied so many of the characteristics of classic female heroines on the network… We fell in love with the pitch.” At the time, casting was not yet complete, but Tassler told reporters, “We’re looking for quality, charisma. She’s got to be everywoman.” The character’s iconic costume has been designed by Colleen Atwood, who also created the updated looks for Stephen Amell’s Arrow and Grant Gustin’s Flash. (Gustin is a fellow “Glee” alum, and Adler formerly wrote and produced the musical series.) While TV has been dominated by male comic book heroes in the years since Lynda Carter’s “Wonder Woman” went off the air, a number of female-led properties are currently in production; ABC recently premiered “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” starring Hayley Atwell; The CW will debut “iZombie,” with Rose McIver, in March; and Netflix is currently in development on “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” played by Krysten Ritter. Benoist can currently be seen in the Oscar-nominated “Whiplash,” which is up for five Academy Awards, including best picture. She will next appear in the feature film “The Longest Ride,” alongside Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood. It will bow in theaters on April 12. When I first saw this it just said Glee star and I assumed it was Kitty. That would have been great.

Damn it, man. Why couldn't it have been Nicola Peltz? I don't HATE Marley Melissa, I just find her dull. I'll at least give it a chance though, unlike The Flash when Grant Gustin got that role, but I'm not as excited about this now as I was when it was announced. But maybe we'll get to see Blake? She recently dyed her hair blonde, too.

I was actually really curious to see what'd B thought, cause we all know how here for Supergirl he is. I'm just a little bummed it's gonna be on CBS, I would've loved for it to be on the CW, for a potential crossover, but I honestly don't know enough about DC to know whether the Flash or Green Arrow would even cross paths with her.

Yeah a crossover would have slayed, especially if it was about Supergirl teaming up with Black Canary.

I don't know who that actress is, so hopefully she'll be a good Kara. Even if this show sucks though, I'm gonna try to support it, because if this is a success, then we may get more female superheroes on TV and in movies.

There really is a pretty insane number of shows based on comic books on tv right now. I hope Zatanna is next.

I want a Judge Dredd TV show, if we're accepting suggestions here.

I want a Judge Dredd TV show, if we're accepting suggestions here. What do you have against women? This is a pattern with you. We're all happily suggesting superheroines and you're all, "We need more men on tv."

So I was talking about this with basic bitch last night and he told me that he had heard Claire Holt was in the running before Melissa Benoist was cast, just in case any of you needed another reason to feel indifferent about their final decision.

Dean Cain and Helen Slater have signed up for guest roles, which is pretty awesome.

I don't even care what the costume looks like (although for the record, I like it, I just wish her hair was more blonde), I'm just glad we don't have to wait 10 years to see her wear a crappy cgi version of it. It would've been nice to see some bright colours in the DCU though.
