With the huge success of Marvel/Disney's 'Avengers Assemble', the call for more ensemble superheroes was always going to be heard and now Warner Brothers are putting together their own Justice League of comic book heroes based on DC characters.
Will Beall has been drafted in to have a go at the script. He's just impressed with the screenplay for 'Gangster Squad' - another ensemble piece which attracted Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Josh Brolin and more to the material.
The Justice League has been on the cards at Warner for years with the last strong attempt being scuppered by the writers' strike in 2008. If it does go through, it means that audiences will see Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman and Green Lantern band together to take on the bad guys from that universe (The Joker etc).
Marvel took on a slower approach with a larger plan in mind, allowing the stars of each of their films (e.g. 'Iron Man', 'Captain America') to interact with each other via cameos and hints at bigger plotlines in the future.
Warner have thus far kept their properties separate with Christian Bale's Batman ready to hang up his cape after a three picture deal, and a new standalone Superman is on the way. Ryan Reynolds' take on Green Lantern was trashed recently as well, putting Warner/DC in a hard spot that would suggest recasting and starting again.
It looks as though the new Man of Steel movie basically rules Superman out of the Justice League movie, which really sucks.
No Supes, no League imo.

Superman will be in it. It just won't be Henry Cavill. They were always planning on making this a standalone film from the other franchises. Thay had already cast Batman and Superman last time and it wasn't Christian Bale and Brandon Routh.
Warner Brothers just doesn't care enough to put effort into this film. They just want something that will make them money. And however terrible this movie will be, it's going to make alot of it.

If they get Gosling I'll be interested. It would probably be for The Flash, but the images running through my head are more pleasant. He could always be Aquaman with Prince Namor's costume instead. Otherwise Martian Manhunter's costume would look awesome on him, without all the green.

I'm pretty sure they stopped production last time because they thought it would be confusing to have two Batmans and two Supermans on the big screen at once. That's probably bullshit though. If they really thought that, they wouldn't have so many active comic book series and cartoons for both characters running at the same time. They just want something that will make them money. And however terrible this movie will be, it's going to make alot of it. Can't dispute the facts

I remember the rumour that Gorilla Grodd would be the villain on his own, which really makes no sense. Grodd is definitely no match for the entire League, no matter how many soldiers he has.
Doomsday would be a good choice though.

If they did go for Grodd they might as well toss Shaggy Man in as well. Darkseid would be my pick. To be fair though, DC does have the worst selection of villains.

Is it wrong that I didn't know what the Justice League was until like a week ago when I saw an episode of The Big Bang Theory where they dressed up as them?

Apparently the film may be remaining in the Nolan-verse (I hate that term but whatever) after all.... weeeeee Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Play Batman in Justice League? Warner Bros. reportedly laying the foundation for its DC movie universe
Earlier today we heard the vaguest of talk from Man of Steel director Zack Snyder which hinted at the possibility that his upcoming Superman film would be setting up Warner Bros.' Justice League movie in some way. And now tonight a new rumor has cropped up that seemingly solidifies that talk: Joseph Gordon-Levitt "absolutely will be appearing in Justice League as the new Batman."
This report -- and the exact wording above -- comes from HitFix, a credible site to be sure. According to their sources, in recent weeks speculation about how to tie together Warner Bros.' various DC characters for Justice League has "turned into conversation, and that conversation seems to be solidifying into a plan." The site also claims that Gordon-Levitt very well might end up on screen as Batman before Justice League's 2015 release -- "they appear to be solidifying deals for Gordon-Levitt and, potentially, at least one other actor from the Nolan films to do… something."
What that something could be is unknown at the moment, but logic -- and speculation -- would dictate that Warners is taking a page out of Marvel Studios' handbook and planning some kind of end-credits cameo for Man of Steel. A bat cameo, perhaps? Where's the anti-bat-goose-bump spray when you need it?!
Of course, none of this is confirmed at the moment -- and even if this is the current line of thinking behind closed doors at the studio, anything could change this early in the process -- but still… Think about where we last saw JGL's character in The Dark Knight Rises this past summer. That could even be construed as the first Easter egg for the Justice League, and we didn't even realize it at the time!
Interestingly, during the release of TDKR much was made about how director Christopher Nolan was bringing his take on Batman to a close. But business is business, and ultimately whatever contract Gordon-Levitt signed when he made that film was with Warner Bros. -- not Nolan. Mixed feelings. Yay for continuity and them not trying to have two Superman's on screen at the same time. Boo to Nolan just not going the fuck away. And MAJOR boo to no Bruce Wayne as Batman. They finally make a Justice League movie and some fake Nolan character nemed Robin is going to play Batman? I wish they would've just not had JGL in DKR at all now and just held him off to do this. DC is such a mess...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt isn't reprising his role in Justice League, thank god!
Anyway, Darkseid is the rumoured villain of the film. I don't think he was the best choice they could have made, especially when Avengers 2 is using Thanos.
