In the spirit of the season, I’m going to try and create at least one new horror movie related thread a day between now and Halloween.
Okay, so everyone (well, almost everyone) loves Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc, but what about ones that aren’t, you know, 30 years old?
“Modern” can be whatever you want. I’m going by things that are still fairly fresh in my mind from seeing them for the first time.
My top 5:
1. The Orphanage - Just a genuinely creepy ghost story. Those are usually my favourites if done well.
2. Planet Terror - Violent. Funny. Hot. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
3. The Mist - Greatest Stephen King adaptation since IT.
4. Trick R Treat - I loved this tbh. Looking forward to the sequel.
5. Jennifer’s Body - I consider it more of a comedy, but it’s just too awesome not be mentioned.
(There are a lot of others that I also really liked that didn’t make the cut. I‘m surprised at how many actually)

My top five would go a little something like this:
1. Jennifer's Body 2. Planet Terror 3. Piranha 3D 4. Drag Me To Hell 5. Hostel
Shout outs to Cloverfield, I Know Who Killed Me, The Devil's Rejects, My Bloody Valentine, Zombie Strippers, Dead Silence, Slither and Dawn of the Dead. What I love about all of these movies is that they're totally different, and for the most part, new and original (no shade @ Piranha, MBV & DotD).

I've been meaning to see I Know Who Killed Me for ages.
I also enjoyed The Grudge, REC, 30 Days of Night, The Eye (Jessica Alba remake) and a bunch of others.

I forgot all about 28 Days Later. That was pretty great. I thought the sequel was boring though.

Bumping this because the last couple years have had some good ones.
2000 to like 2007 was a terrible era for horror movies I thought but the last few years has gotten a lot better and there’s been a bunch that I’ve liked.
I loved Planet Terror, The Orphanage, Inside, House of the Devil, V/H/S, The Reef, Cabin in the Woods, The Mist and Eden Lake.
I also liked Insidious, The Strangers, Trick R Treat, Drag Me to Hell, Jennifer's Body, The Last Exorcism, Rogue, Martyrs, Chernobyl Diaries, Paranormal Activity, REC and probably even more I'm forgetting right now.

My top 2 is probably the same as it was way back in the original post. I love them both for different reasons.
Planet Terror is the most exciting/entertaining horror movie I've seen in the last few years and El Orfanato/The Orphanage is the one that I found creepiest. There's a scene near the end with ghost kids playing a game of hide and seek or something like that and it freaked me out so much the first time I saw it.
