The ads looked a little hokey to me. The antagonist(?) looked like a villain in a Disney channel original movie. It's also entirely too late for a sequel.

I think they overestimated how popular The Shining is to younger people these days. There was a topic on Reddit saying how a lot of teens and even people in their 20s have never watched it.
It reminds me of Blade Runner 2049. One of my favourite movies of the decade but it didn't make the money they were hoping for. The original was a cult favourite but not some blockbuster hit that record numbers of people would be running to see a sequel to 35 years later.
