I like a lot of Spanish and French horror movies. I don't know if it's better directing or better acting but they are usually way creepier to me on average than English language stuff.
Outside of horror movies, I love City of God.

JCVD is a fantastic movie, and it proved that Jean-Claude Van Damme can actually act. He was definitely jobbed of an Oscar nomination that year.
And of course, I have to mention The Raid, because that movie is perfect.
