Gay Men Undermine Equality - Rose McGowan

The 'Charmed' star made the claim to controversial author Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast last month.

She said: "Gay men are as misogynistic as straight men, if not more so. I have an indictment of the gay community right now, I'm actually really upset with them."

She continued and said: "You wanna talk about the fact that I have heard nobody in the gay community, no gay males, standing up for women on any level?

"There is Sharia law active in Saudi Arabia, there's a woman who's about to be stoned – I have not heard [AIDS activist] Cleve Jones discuss her, and nor will he.

"I think it's what happens to you as a group when you are starting to get most of what you fought for? What do you do now?

"What I would hope they would do is extend a hand to women. Gay males are male first


"Women, by-and-large, have very much helped the gay community get to where they are today.

"And I have seen not a single peep from these people, who supposedly represent lesbians as well… when the equal pay act was shut down by Republicans in the Senate, not a single man mentioned that.

"I see now people who have basically fought for the right to stand on top of a float wearing an orange speedo and take molly [MDMA].

"[Gay misogyny] is a huge problem."

I love Rose and normally I find her to be amazing, but she can go somewhere with these blanket statements.

I agree with what she's saying. Misogyny is very much alive within the gay community and I think it's definitely an issue. Especially since a lot of gays are attacking her with hateful comments, rather than trying to prove her wrong and respectfully disagree. I'd assume that most wouldn't think misogyny in the gay community is an issue because well, they're gay and being gay for some reason is synonymous with being feminine or a woman.

However I feel like a lot of gay men are feminist. So to say 'no gay males are standing up for women' is absolutely ridiculous. It's a bad example to use, but just look at all these female actresses or pop stars that have huge gay fan bases, all of them love these women and even idolize them and talk about how they're queens and build them up. And when growing up I can guarantee they were told to look up to their fathers or brothers because looking up to a woman is weak, it's not something a boy should do.

Sure there are misogynists in the gay community, and every other community, which is why it was so needless to target gays instead of misogynists themselves. And to say we're just as bad as straight men about it in a time where women are being killed for telling men not to catcall them? It comes off as homophobic (which we all know she isn't...), and it derailed the point she was trying to make.

Honestly I was more bothered by her saying we've fought for the right to stand on a float in an orange speedo and pop molly. For someone who claims to have fought so hard to help the gay community get to where it is, she seems to have a pretty narrow and frankly ignorant perception of what we're about.

Her comments were simply idiotic - as she'll tell you herself. If your problem is with misogynists, then address misogynists. Don't clock the gays out of nowhere with a blanket statement, because then you got me fucked up, Rose.
