They should save Zedd for the sequel. Let Rita do her thing.

- Dean Israelite in Talks for Power Rangers"Project Almanac" filmmaker Dean Israelite is in negotiations to direct the "Power Rangers" movie for Lionsgate and Saban Brands, TheWrap has learned.
Israelite is an up-and-coming filmmaker who is a huge fan of the franchise and aims to bring a fresh voice to the property. He has been courted for several tentpoles around Hollywood since but he has turned them all down while waiting for the right one.
With the time travel-themed "Project Almanac," Israelite proved he can get strong results out of a young ensemble and a limited budget for an original sci-fi movie.
First announced in September, "Power Rangers" was written by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, whose credits include Marvel's "Thor" and "X-Men: First Class."

- Lionsgate Plans Power Rangers as a Significant Series of Movies
Lionsgate executives shared plans for the company's upcoming film slate with a press on Friday morning, including an update on the upcoming Power Rangers reboot movie.
The company says that, despite pushing the film's release date back from July to January, they have confidence in the project.
"We're very excited and with Dean's [Israelite] vision; we felt very comfortable looking for opportunistic dating," Lionsgate Motion Pictures Group Co-Chairman Rob Friedman explained on the conference call. "We really believe that great movies deliver no matter what date they're on."
The executives went on to say that the company sees Power Rangers as a "significant series of movies."
Power Rangers is scheduled for release on January 13, 2017.

Oh no, that release date is terrible. January and February are the absolute worst months for movies and every big movie that comes out before April or at the very least late March usually bombs horribly. I'd say push it up to November or December but it might have some competition. It's best bet would be to move to April 2017 and kick off the blockbuster season.

There are some rumored spoilers floating around - which are most likely false - but I figured I'd post 'em here anyways in case Tarry's interested, lol. >Zordon and Lord Zedd are brothers and were once apprentices of the powerful Virtax, but while Zordon became his successor, Lord Zedd became obsessed with power and vowed to conquer the galaxy.
>Zordon assembled the Power Rangers to fight Lord Zedd, but Lord Zedd corrupter their leader, Krey, who killed the others and became Lord Zedd's apprentice and enforcer, leaving Zordon desillusioned with the Power Rangers.
>Lord Zedd is searching for the Xarian Crystal, the source of the Power Rangers' powers, which could make his army invincible.
>It is located on Earth, forcing Zordon to assemble five young human warriors to defend it from Krey, who is sent to retrieve it alongside an army of putties (here called "Warlings").
>The five teenagers are Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Billy and Trini (here called "Tracy").
>Bulk and Skull are here, too.
>Alpha is an artificial intelligence that recruits the future Rangers through their technologies devices. He's more dry than wacky, and doesn't have a physical body. In a way, he resembles J.A.R.V.I.S.
>There are two giant monsters throughout the movie, one defeated by the separated Zords and one defeated by the combined Mega-Zord.
>Jason is pretty much the main character and Krey is his foil.
>No Tommy.
>No Rita, but there's a reference to her.
>No Goldar.
>It's not gritty, but it definitely takes itself serious and wants to set up sequels.
>The Rangers are pretty Breakfeast Club-ish.
>Jason is a poor kid from the slums and is on the verge of going down a path of crime.
>Kimberly is a rich girl (her father is actually the one that accidentally uncovers the Xarian Crystal through his company), but longs for more.
>Tracy is sheltered and her parents demand a lot from her.
>Zach is a star athlete and his parents are also very demanding.
>Billy is a social outcast, skilled hacker and also, he's gay.
>Hints of romance between Jason/Kimberly and Zack/Tracy.
>Bulk and Skull are social outcasts as well and actually more or less friends of Jason. They both come from broken homes and want to become "badass gangsters", but they're actually good people. I actually really liked those guys, they're different but great.
>Zordon is still a wise mentor, but the years have been rough on him, and he actually has little faith in the Rangers at first. He comes around in the end.
>Five big action scenes.
>While the Rangers are all pretty sport-y, they're not all martial experts and actually have to learn to fight. Each has a particular athletic skill set, and they stumble on each other a lot trying to get their teamwork going. Again, I don't even believe these are true, but if they were, I'd be fine with all of it except for "Tracy" and "Warlings."

Power Rangers Movie Will be "Mature but Still Playful," Says DirectorIGN: In more general terms, how do you approach the tone with something like this? Is it going to be a little edgier like Project Almanac, or are you going to push the humor as well? Israelite: Oh, yes, it needs to be completely playful, and it needs to be really fun and funny. But like Project Almanac, I hope it's going to feel very grounded at the same time, and very contemporary and have a real edge to it, and a real gut to it. So I think it's going to be a fun, joyful [movie] but one that feels completely grounded in a real world, with real characters going through real things.
IGN: Do you think we might start hearing about casting on that any time soon? Israelite: Yeah, I hope so. We're just at the beginnings of that. We're going to be shooting soon, so yes, I'm hoping news of that is going to come out in the next few months.

- 'Power Rangers' Rumor: Reboot Aiming to Cast Unknowns
In recent years, popular kids toys and TV series of the '80s and '90s have found new life on the big screen, including the Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Of course, another cherished children's series set to reach theaters in the coming years is Lionsgate and Saban's Power Rangers, to be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac). Based on the ongoing Power Rangers show, the film will be a "mature but playful" update on the story of a group of teenagers who morph into superheroes and team up to fight villains of the universe.
Throughout its 22 television seasons, two feature films and various reboots within its continuity, the main Power Rangers cast has generally been composed of young, unknown actors. Now, it seems the movie reboot will stay true to its source by at least casting relative unknowns as its lead characters.
Umberto Gonzalez (now of Heroic Hollywood) is reporting that his sources claim the studio is looking for newcomers to fill the shoes – or suits, rather – of the Power Rangers in the upcoming movie. Casting appears to have just begun, as Israelite teased recently, and Gonzalez says "it's expected to be all unknown actors for the actual Power Rangers as the studio wants them all to play late teens."
According to Israelite, it won't be long before the Power Rangers cast is revealed, so we may start to get more answers than questions for this film soon enough.

I just hope they don't cast a basic bitch for Kimberly.

I don't mind them calling them Warlings, just as long as the Rangers mock them by calling them Putties.
Trini or bust though.

Alleged character bios:Jason – 17 years old, the makings of someone or something great if he would just get out of his own way. Jason was a legend of this town—a freshman quarterback with the skills to take him all the way. People knew his name. Children wore his jersey. Until, one night Jason wrapped his car around a pole and busted out his knee. Everything Jason was going to become ended in an instant. And with it, he lost himself. When we meet him at the start of the film, he's a kid in need of redemption. By the end, he'll be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage and find who they truly are.
Kimberly – 17 years old, unconventionally cool all in a way the popular girls wish they were. In fact, she was one of those girls, but isn't anymore. Not since she's returned to school after an absence of 6 months. Rumors are flying as to why; rumors she seems not to care about, because she's come back with this new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude. But the truth is, it’s all masking a deep secret that makes her feel profoundly vulnerable.
Trini – 17 years old, mysterious and extremely bright. Her parents constantly move for work, making Trini the perpetual new girl to any school. A loner who owns it, Trini is self-sufficient, contemplative, but always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she'll never admit it – least of all to herself.
Billy – 17 years old, slight and awkward. Billy is challenged in his abilities to communicate and interact socially. Whip-smart and sweet, but always odd. Sometimes in a fun way, sometimes not, Billy is a kid with no filter. Showing his emotions, understanding sarcasm, and dealing with his OCD is a constant challenge. Has never really had any friends and instantly gravitates towards Jason.
Zack – 17 years old, always the life of the party. Filled with bravado and swagger, Zack's tough and cool on the exterior. A charming guy who's never had trouble with the one-liner, nor lacked confidence around women. A great athlete that's never wanted to play on any team but his own. Zack advertises everything about himself, except the truth, which is that he lives in a trailer park with his single mom, and because of it, feels deeply inferior to all his peers.
