Let’s retrace our relationships with music through the years and see how our tastes have changed, if at all.
I remember my Mum used to listen to stuff like ABBA and Queen but I never paid any real attention to music until around the mid 90’s when I heard my Dad listening to Oasis and I decided that I liked them. So I looked through the rest of his music and discovered some other stuff like Guns N Roses and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. There were usually only some songs here and there that I liked though. The idea of actually listening to entire albums was so boring to me.
Then around the late 90’s I would always buy the latest NOW compilation album when it came out even though most of it was crap. The songs I did like I would play over and over though. Around this time my little sister would listen to stuff like the Spice Girls and S Club 7 and I would leave the room if she put that crap on. You see, I only listened to cool pop stuff that it wasn’t embarrassing to admit listening to. Like Britney Spears and Robbie Williams. Speaking of Britney, me and pretty much every other male in my class at the time had a huge crush on her when the Baby One More Time video came out.
When my teenage/high school years came, or maybe a little before that, I started getting more into rock. Before that I mostly just stuck to the Oasis/RHCP stuff but now I discovered bands like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana (who before I had only known for Smells Like Teen Spirit), Radiohead, Jane’s Addiction, Massive Attack, the Pixies, Manic Street Preachers, etc. A lot of these are still among my favourite bands today. And I remember I was a huge Gorillaz fan when they first came out.
Around that same time I also started listening to rap music. At first I only liked the obvious stuff like Eminem, 2Pac and Dr. Dre until I started digging deeper and found the likes of Nas, Pharcyde, GZA, Mos Def and Ice Cube (at first I thought he was just an actor who put out some novelty songs – I didn’t realise he first became famous by releasing a bunch of critically acclaimed albums).
I never really cared for classic rock for the longest time and thought most of it was boring. As I get older though I’ve started to appreciate a lot more of it. I’m still not really interested in the Beatles or the Rolling Stones but I love Pink Floyd now for instance and could listen to their songs all day. Same with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and a bunch of others.
Which brings me today where my iPod is usually filled with about 30% 90’s rock songs, 20% 90’s rap, 20% classic rock, 20% pop/R&B and 10% recent/fairly recent rock or rap stuff. Right now I definitely listen to 90's music more than anything and more often than not it's rock.
