After saying that it was awesome idea last night (yah, I know ), I just sent an article I wrote on Melina to her official site. We'll see whether or not they do anything with it, but I'll post it here anyways, just so that it wasn't for nothing.
Title: There's No Substitute for Passion!
I've pretty much always been a wrestling fan. So many people seem to move away from it with age, but I'm very happy to say that I'm one of the few (okay, there are certainly more than a few of us, but you get the point!) who haven't fallen victim to this fate. To me, wrestling is the perfect combination of action and drama. The athleticism of the competitors is undeniable, the matches are hard-hitting and utterly captivating, and the storylines and characters, whilst certainly being cheesy and over-the-top at the best of times, give wrestling that extra layer of colour and energy that we all love.
Nevertheless, I have to say that without a favourite - that is, someone who has helped me to maintain that same level of excitement I had when I was ten years old - my interest in wrestling may have fallen to the wayside years ago. True, everyone has their favourite wrestlers, but not so many have someone who they can genuinely and without question deem their personal idol, and I will proudly declare that Melina Pérez is just that for me. Sure, some people might consider it odd for an eighteen year old male from Ireland to idolize a female wrestler, but to put it bluntly, I really don't give a crap, haha.
When people are explaining that their favourite is their favourite, they tend to get into the technicalities. You know, if it's a singer they'll talk about how they can hit all the right notes, or if it's a wrestler (as it is in this case), they'll take about how they can do this or that, or how they can wrestle a sixty minute match with no difficulty, or perhaps how some wrestling magazine has given them so many five star match ratings. They tend to forget about the key factor, that being that their favourite is someone who they love to watch. Someone who can make them feel something, be it happiness or sadness or anger or pride or whatever emotion you can think of. For me personally, Melina does just that. Mick Foley was absolutely correct when he declared live on Raw in 2006 that there is something uniquely special about Melina. It was apparent when she debuted with Johnny and Joey back in 2005, and it's just as apparent in 2011. Hell, it's apparent every time she steps into the ring, because she just has that magical quality about her.
Like so many more of her fans, Melina first captured my heart as part of MNM. 2005 was a year in which my love for wrestling was just beginning to fade away after a somewhat dull 2004, but the arrival of this new Diva - and boy, you can bet your ass that Melina was a Diva...she was THE Diva! - changed things completely. I found myself making sure to catch every single episode of SmackDown that year, even when it switched to the Friday night slot. Likewise when she and her man Johnny Nitro moved to Raw the following year. No doubt that every wrestler in the locker-room gives it their all and tries incredibly hard each and every week, but there was just something else about Melina...that extra spark, if you will. In an era when WWE women were coming and going like crazy, I knew that Miss Pérez would be around for a very long time, and I've been proven right, because here we are, six years later, and Melina is still a central part of World Wrestling Entertainment. In a world that as far as I can tell is quite fickle when it comes to its female talent, Melina has stood the test of time and has become one of the most celebrated women in company history. Why? Because her ability, energy and sheer passion merit it.
People can be cruel. They can try to tear apart good people for no reason other than to be malicious, and it's unfair and honestly quite sickening. Melina has had her fair share of critics, and has been attacked with rumours and cruelty over the course of her career. In spite of this she's remained strong and has risen with her head held high. Rumours can hurt, and people can be mean, but it's important to keep in mind that ultimately, the internal beauty of a person will be all that matters. Melina is a wonderful person with a good heart: her fans can attest to this! Anyone who makes such an effort to communicate and bring joy to those around her can only be good.
As a professional wrestler, Melina is in my eyes legendary: her character is beyond powerful, and her matches speak for themselves. But to me, the thing that stands out the most about Melina is the human quality beneath all of that. As much as I idolize the woman, there will always be something distinctly relatable about her; she's a superstar, but she's also just a girl who, like everyone else, had a dream, and did everything within her power to make that dream come true. I don't think she's every lost touch with that girl, and I can't help but love and respect her for that: it's the primary reason for me taking such pride in calling myself a Melina fan. I want to express my sincerest gratitude to Melina for providing me and everyone else with someone to look up to...a figure from which we can draw inspiration and in turn pursuit our own dreams.
From the bottom of my heart: Thank You.
