This has the potential to be awesome, or awful, because casting is apparently a mess right now and filming is supposed to begin next month. It's going to be directed by Guy Ritchie, so that's already a plus because he's great at mixing action with humor. Supposedly they're having trouble finding a lead actor to play Aladdin. Disney has pushed for Dev Patel or Riz Ahmed (Star Wars Rogue One) to play him, but Guy Ritchie wants an unknown.
As for Jasmine, Power Ranger's Naomi Scott is the frontrunner.  Sir Ben Kingsly is rumored for Jafar  And annoyingly, Will Smith has supposedly signed on to play Genie  I hope Gilbert Gottfried reprises his role as Iago or they just keep the bird quiet, cause it wouldn't be the same. |

I'm already seeing complaints on Twitter about Jasmine being whitewashed. š
When Power Rangers was coming out they were thrilled she was Indian and not a white girl. I've really grown to fucking hate social justice warriors lol.
EDIT: Never mind, apparently it's the equivalent of a Chinese person playing a Japanese person even though they're both considered Asian, which is messy. š

Yeah I think there's definitely a difference between casting an Indian actor in something that's probably supposed to take place in the middle east. Especially when people of Persian and/or Arab descent are pretty underrepresented. But lowkey, I'd be cool with Dev Patel as Aladdin so Imma just stay in my lane for this ride. |

Oh, that argument went out the window for me @ Agrabah. Aladdin was never my favorite growing up so I totally forgot it was set in a fictional place. And sis needs her coins if Power Rangers isn't getting a sequel.

I'm not sure why people are getting upset about cultural ignorance over a movie that is based on a pretty racially insensitive and at times straight out racist cartoon. The movie was a mashup of different cultures despite being pretty obvious about being set in the Middle East. At this point I'm just pleased they're not casting Jake Gyllenhaal.

Will Smith is gonna play the genie and Naomi Scott is gonna play Jasmine. I'm excited for their interpretation of Jasmine's outfit. And Mena Massoud is playing Aladdin. He's super handsome.

Aladdin was basically the only Disney movie I really liked as a kid. I don't really care to see a new/live action version though.
