The Force has been released.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join original stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in “Star Wars: Episode VII.”

Disney and Lucasfilm made the announcement Tuesday.

The plan is for a May 2014 start date.

LUCASFILM DISTANCES ITSELF FROM STAR WARS EXPANDED UNIVERSE

In anticipation of the upcoming trilogy of new Star Wars movies, Lucasfilm has decided to take an official stance in regards to the IP’s long-running expanded universe which includes comic books, novels, and video games. Sadly, this official stance equates to: they didn’t happen.

In a lengthy statement that was posted over on starwars.com, Lucasfilm explained how it didn’t want to make the writers behind the upcoming movies beholden to the massive amount of additional lore that was added in via the expanded universe (and which often ended up contradicting itself). In order to accomplish this, the studio decided that any events outside of the previous six Star Wars films and the Clone Wars episodic cartoon series are in fact non-canon and shouldn’t be considered as events that actually took place within the greater Star Wars fiction.

For video game fans, that means that events and original characters depicted in games such as Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire didn’t actually happen as far as Lucasfilm is concerned. Even BioWare’s free-to-play MMO endeavor Star Wars: The Old Republic falls under this new non-canon umbrella. The silver lining is that any expanded universe material (including games) that is released after the debut of the first new trilogy film, which includes the upcoming games from DICE and Visceral Games, will be considered canon and could potentially influence future Star Wars movies beyond the upcoming trilogy.

'Star Wars: Episode VII' casts Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendoline Christie



This just in from the Star Wars front: Episode VII has cast 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones‘ Gwendoline Christie.

Though we don’t know who they play, it’s news that should be greeted with a joyful Ewok dance by many fans, especially those who were critical that the film’s earlier casting announcement was distressingly light on women.

I like the lens flares. They've started using them in a lot of sci-fi movies and games and I think it makes it feel more spacey.

The title of J.J. Abrams’ upcoming “Star Wars: Episode VII” has officially been given a name: “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

The tweet also announced that the highly anticipated tentpole from Disney and Lucasfilm has completed principal photography.

Abrams is directing the pic that stars John Boyega, Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher also reprising their roles.

Disney chief Bob Iger has said that “The Force Awakens” will be set 30 years after 1983′s “Return of the Jedi” and will feature new and familiar faces.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

I like the title, actually. I think it fits in well with Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back.

I'm pretty excited. I think I might even go full nerd this time and dress up and go opening night. Okay, that's a lie. I might subtly dress up and go two weeks after it had been in theaters to avoid the real freaks.

I kind of wish Abrams would have released a fake trailer where they didn't use lightsabers at all, but used machine guns. The death threats would have been hilarious.
