Justin Bieber kicked off the new year on a real high note -- clutching a smoldering blunt at a big party inside a Newport Beach hotel room this week ... and TMZ has the photos.

The pics were snapped on January 2nd -- the day after a paparazzo was killed while trying to take photos of Bieber's Ferrari -- and it's pretty obvious ... Bieber wasn't feeling too bad about the whole situation.

Sources at the party tell TMZ, Bieber's BFF Lil Twist was there too -- the 19-year-old rapper who was driving the Biebs' Ferrari at the time the paparazzo was killed.

According to sources, Twist and his brother were rolling all the blunts and smoking everyone up ... and there was a LOT of pot smoke.

It's pretty ironic -- considering sources close to Bieber were insistent ... the photog who was killed lied when he said Justin was smoking weed hours before the fatal accident.

And there's this -- we're told Bieber had security present ... but no one seemed to mind that people were snapping photos.

As for talking points -- sources tell us Bieber was chatting it up about how tired he was because he'd been staying up late recently. Shockingly, we're told the conversation eventually turned to late night fast food ... and where they could get it.

We're told a girl also crashed in the hotel room with Justin -- NOT Selena. It's unclear if they hooked up.

Bieber's people had no comment.

Now, y'all know they tried it with my good sis Miley a couple of years ago, too. I'm not even here for a weed debate, but I am here to sprinkle some holy water on the paparazzi scandal (may he rest in peace). I think the best example of better decision making in that case would be to not chase cars on the interstate. I think it's unfair to Biebs that his name keeps getting dragged into it when he wasn't involved, and I'm sickened that he's expected to feel guilty over it because he's a celebrity, and that he's made out to be a bad person if he goes about dat lyfe.

Those are just my thoughts on the matter, but I wanna hear what T's y'all caught from this.

I'd be more surprised if someone his age wasn't smoking pot. As for the paparazzi if he wasn't being a dumbass he'd still be alive. They're stalkers, but since it's their job it's okay? No. If any of us had someone following us around, showing up everywhere we are and taking pictures it so would not fly.

I don't see how being a paparazzi is even legal. It's invasion of privacy, harassment, and alot of times trespassing.

I'm sure we're all guilty of encouraging it by watching some garbage show on E! or TMZ, but it's ridiculous. It should've been stopped after Princess Diana, but it still continues, and it's still getting people killed.

Justin Bieber Fans Cutting Themselves So He'll Stop Smoking

Justin Bieber's fanbase, aka his Beliebers, are notorious for their rabid devotion to all things Biebs. While this is great for Bieber's record and merch sales, it can lead to tragedy, as is the case here.

Internet message board 4Chan's infamous "/b" board is to blame. They began posting up pics of people cutting themselves and claimed they were doing it so Bieber would stop smoking weed. So while the origins of the trend are fake, the results are very real.

Hashtags such as #cuttingforbieber, #cut4bieber and #cutting4bieber started trending on Twitter, with many people from Justin's predominantly pre-teen female fanbase posting up pics of themselves with cuts to their arms.

Let's hope this trend ends quickly and that nobody is seriously hurt.

4Chan is also responsible for the hoax last year which spread claiming Justin Bieber had cancer, and that fans should shave their heads to show support.

Justin Bieber Accused of Battery by Neighbor

Trouble just followed Justin Bieber across the Atlantic.

With his Believe Tour schedule calling for him to be back in Munich on Thursday, the 19-year-old returned to his L.A.-area home from Europe this week only to end up on the receiving end of a battery complaint lodged by a neighbor, who claims the "Boyfriend" singer made threats during an argument.

No other official details were available as to what Bieber is accused of doing, but L.A. Sheriff's Department spokesman Steve Whitmore confirmed to E! News that deputies were called to the pop star's Calabasas home shortly after 9 a.m. and the alleged incident remains under investigation.

Bieber's rep has not returned a request for comment.

Everyone and their inept cousin are coming for this poor kid now. It's getting kinda ridiculous.
