I know we've had threads like this, but I don't think there's anything wrong with starting a new one, and it's nice and positive, and it also gives those of us who require at least one monthly post to rave about our favourites an opportunity to do so. Write as little or as much as you like.
My favourite: Melina
Obviously the first thing that attracted me to her was what she was doing in the ring, in terms of managing/wrestling/promos and everything else. I can appreciate that Melina was rough around the edges and in many ways still is; technically she's far from perfect, but I don't want her to be perfect. Fundamental skills in anything are great, but what I loved and continue love about her is just the sheer effort she puts into everything to make whatever she's doing entertaining for her fans. It's in her wrestling, it's in the inflections and tone of her voice when she speaks, and it's definitely written across her face.
Going beyond what we saw on WWE television though...to me, Melina is a role model. Again, I'm not saying she's a perfect person, but speaking for me as an individual, I feel like I can look up to her and relate to her and just be inspired by her. It might sound ridiculous to other people that I have so much admiration for a female wrestler, but whatever. I feel like in spite of her flaws she ultimately has her heart in the right place and just wants to do what she can to connect with people and make them happy. When I hear her speak about things she's really passionate about and her voice genuinely cracks with emotion...I love that.
It's in the little things too, some of them are being pretty silly. People attack her looks and call her ugly, but she's never claimed to be the most beautiful human being on the planet. And it's the facial features...I look at some of the things I'm insecure about...the way my mouth looks huge and overly wide when I smile, my cheeks and the way I gain weight in them, the way my face can look weird and long at times. I just look at Melina and the things people attack her for at times and it's like, if someone like that has these imperfections and is beautiful in her own way regardless then why should I let stuff like that bother me? Also, there's the whole cultural pride thing. I love that she takes so much pride in her Mexican heritage and tried to get that across when she was in WWE, be it through her art or her costumes or whatever else. I can only hope to embrace my Irishness to the same extent.
I'm rambling here, and I don't know if anyone's actually read all this, but the point is that I look up to Melina both as a wrestler and as a person. I don't know her personally, but as a fan I feel that I do. Inexplicable though it may be, I'm not sure if I'll ever connect to another television or media or sport personality in the way that I've connected to her.
