...OBJECTIVELY speaking, from someone who prefers Rihanna to Gaga! I'm comparing 2010/11 Rihanna and Gaga to the two Ms during their WWE tenures for the record.
My logic:
At this point, Rihanna has taken over Lady Gaga as the biggest thing in pop. Despite keeping a lower profile than her fellow popstar, Rihanna churns out hit after hit and has retained her position at the top of the industry. She works hard, but it might not be completely apparent on account of things generally seeming quite effortless for her. By contrast, Lady Gaga certainly gets people talking. She simultaneously excites and infuriates, creating catchy songs and cultivating her fanbase, but turning a lot of people off in the process. She tries her hardest to be innovative and unique, and sometimes it works, but a lot of people just see it as her trying utterly too hard to be something she's not. She constantly toes the line between super-passionate and just plain overly thought out and rehearsed.
I imagine you're already making the links in your head at this point. Mickie James wasn't necessarily the flashiest of Divas...she didn't wear the fanciest costumes, do the flashiest moves or create the most exciting entrances, but for whatever reason it all just worked, and her popularity never faltered during her tenure in the company. Some might have called her lazy, but others just saw her success as effortless. On the other hand, Melina never managed to secure Mickie's level of universal popularity when she was in WWE. She had her fanbase and made an impact, but Mickie seemed to be at the 'top of the charts', if you will. Melina would wear crazy Aztec costumes and contort her body into bizarre shapes to get people talking, and many would, but many would roll their eyes and accuse her of being quite the desperado. Even beyond the wrestling she bears a comparison to Lady Gaga in that she expresses her desire to make a difference and do something special, which could often be perceived as gushy and even fake by spectators/readers. An additional point would be that like Gaga, controversy and things not necessarily related to her wrestling threaten to overshadow her accomplishments, despite her goal being to be the artist...the innovator.
Finally, in terms of popularity and fanbases, I would argue that Mickie has more universal appeal and is on the whole liked by a larger number of people, which is the case for Rihanna also, whereas Melina, like Lady Gaga, inspires a large amount of DISLIKE from people. At the same time, I feel that on the whole Melina fans are altogether more passionate than Mickie fans (the odd freak threatening to explode bombs aside, OBV); despite being smaller in number, they'll defend their favourite to the death, whereas Mickie I think tends to have more of a casual, less offensive level of support.
Hmmmmmmmmm...
If you've managed to wade your way through this, make your own tenuous connections between wrestlers and non-wrestlers!
I really need to get to sleep.
