Avril Lavigne may be wishing she could say "goodbye" to her Hello Kitty video.

The candy-coated clip shows Avril donning a cupcake tutu and Skrillex haircut, strutting through a candy store with stone-faced Asian dancers, playing air guitar, drinking sake and yelling Japanese phrases over a J-Pop-influenced dubstep track.

The controversial video for her new single (co-penned by husband/Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger) has caused a stir across social media for its "racist" appropriation of Japanese culture.

"Not sure if this Avril Lavigne video is terrible, racist, or terribly racist," podcast host @desusnice tweeted.

"Avril Lavigne's racist new 'Hello Kitty' video is so awful it reaches some kind of like next plateau of terribleness," Grantland writer @mollylambert tweeted.

Billboard callsHello Kitty an "embarrassment in any language" and E! Online says it will leave viewers "sad and confused."

I'm not Japanese, so I can't really comment on whether or not it's racist. I do, however, believe that it's incredibly ignorant, and I seriously have no idea why she thought making a music video filled with Japanese stereotypes was a good idea, it's freaking 2014.

The video was not racist. Was it whack as all fuck? Yes. Racist? I don't think so. At least not any more than Gwen, Nicki or Katy.

When Gaga makes a video with a gaggle of gay dancers in heels, it doesn't make her homophobic. Sure, those stereotypes are lame and I roll my eyes at it, but there is an audience it appeals to and just because I'm not part of that audience doesn't mean I can put a damaging label on it. Well I could, but it would just be me being messy.

Honestly, the most shocking thing about all this is that everyone's surprised Avril Lavigne put out a terrible music video.
