The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean has admitted that the upcoming death of a character "may have become overhyped".
It was first revealed last year that a character would be killed off in the season 26 premiere, which airs this Sunday.
However, Jean has said that he has tried to play down reports of the character being "iconic" so that fans would not be disappointed by the outcome.
"I've done everything I can to temper any disappointment by saying that, although the press is claiming this is an iconic' character, we never said that," he told TVLine. "We just said it's a 'beloved' character.
"I think it may have become overhyped, though I've never heard the term 'underhyped' before. Either way, it's an emotional story, and it's one we're really proud of."
Speculation as to who would be killed off continued when it was confirmed that the character has been voiced by an actor who received an Emmy for the role.
"The next thing I knew, it was on newspapers in Uruguay. It was insane, but once that happened, we thought, 'OK, how can we take advantage of this thing we didn't mean to start?'," Jean said.
Fans speculated that Krusty the Clown would be the one to exit the long-running series, when it was revealed that the episode was titled 'Clown in the Dumps', but Jean dismissed that as people "jumping to their own conclusions".
The Simpsons returns in the US on Fox at 8pm ET on Sunday, September 28. It will be shown in the UK this October.
It's now being speculated that the character that dies is:
